Certificate IV in Dental Assisting (HLT43007)
Overview
This qualification provides the knowledge and skills necessary to provide an advanced level of Chairside assistance to the operator, including contributing to the quality of dental care provided through well developed communication skills; providing an oral health education program that promotes good oral health as part of general good health; as well as implementing and monitoring infection control policy and procedures.
This qualification allows the dental assistant to select electives to address specific workplace needs in line with jurisdictional Dental Acts and Regulations.

Electives
Electives are created in accordance with the national packaging rules to best reflect the current needs of industry. Your ICM qualification coordinator can discuss the suitability of each elective to your students.
- Dental radiography*
- Oral health promotion
- General Anaesthesia & conscious sedation
- Dental practice administration work
* Please note: the Dental Radiography elective in this qualification IS approved for licensing criteria with the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Water NSW
Duration of Study
Students are required to be employed in their chosen field of study to enhance their ‘on-the-job’ learning. They need to be supervised by a qualified staff member and working a minimum of 21 hours per week. It is anticipated students will take 12 month to complete this qualification.
Students are required to demonstrate all compulsory units from the Certificate III in Dental Assisting (as listed below) is a pre-requisite for entry to this qualification.

- HLTIN301B Comply with infection control policies and procedures
- HLTIN302A Process reusable instruments and equipment in health work
- HLTOHS200A Participate in OHS processes
- HLTDA303B Prepare for and assist with oral health care procedures
- HLTDA304B Assist with dental radiography
- HLTDA306B Assist with administration in dental practice
- HLTFA301B Apply first aid
These units can be completed as part of this qualification.
Cost
The full cost of this course is $3365. This certificate is eligible for funding as a traineeship in NSW. The government may pay up to $4000 for each New Entrant or Existing Worker Trainee. Your ICM consultant will be able to give you more details on the traineeship program.
